Monkey Harvest by Marion Adnams Print
The curious, monkey-like character (actually a small, earthenware pot) depicted in this painting was among the first items that caught Adnams’ attention in the Museum stores. She took it home, to her house on Otter Street, where she placed it on the mantelpiece. She recalled: ‘one day, I went for a walk in the fields and came home with a few stalks of oats and barley. For want of a better place, I slipped them into the monkey’s crooked arm. Instantly, he sprang to life, a harvest monkey carrying his tiny sheaf.’
Monkey Harvest was purchased for the Museum’s collection later that year and reunited with the ceramic monkey that had inspired it.
